The Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square in Budapest is a cherished tradition in the heart of the Hungarian capital. As one of Budapest's most prominent holiday events, it attracts around 800,000 visitors and locals every year. And that’s no surprise. The market, which takes place in one of the city's most iconic squares against a beautiful architectural backdrop, enchants visitors of all ages alike: dazzling Christmas lights, a warm atmosphere and sparkling ornaments all around you. Culinary delights such as chimney cake, Hungary's world-famous “Lángos” (deep-fried flatbread) or goulash, plus live music performances, choirs and cultural shows on a stage in the centre of the square.
And, of course, they’ve also paid attention to sustainability. The market's eco-friendly approach only allows for biodegradable cups, plates, and cutlery, and it has a strong focus on handmade and local products for you to browse through at its many beautiful wooden stalls.

Starting the journey: From Vienna to Parndorf

The road trip takes you from Vienna to Budapest on a direct route. Starting in Vienna, you head south on the A4. If you require charging, you can do so either at the IONITY station Göttlesbrunn, 30 kilometres along the way, or at the IONITY station Parndorf, another 20 kilometres down the road.

Crossing into Hungary: From Parndorf to Bábolna

Back on the road, you continue on the A4 for slightly less than 40 kilometres before crossing the border into Hungary. In Hungary, you stay on the same road for almost 80 kilometres. During this leg of your trip, the name of the road changes to M1, but that should not concern you; it just means you're on the right track. Right under the hour, you arrive at the IONITY station Báblona, where you can recharge your EV if needed.

Arriving in Budapest

For the last leg of your journey, you stay on the M1 for about 95 kilometres towards Budapest. Should you need to charge before entering Budapest, the IONITY station Szigetszentmiklós is located south.
Once you’ve made your way to the city centre, you should try to park somewhere close to Vörösmarty Square. After parking, you make your way to the Christmas market by foot to then immerse yourself in the magical Christmas spirit of Budapest, try all of the tasty Hungarian foods and take in the festive illumination around you.
