From Munich to the ski area of Les Trois Vallées with IONITY
Crystal clear sky above, crackling snow under your feet, and dazzling views ahead: Winter is here, and what could be a better way to enjoy it than a trip to the mountains for some winter sports, cozy afternoons, and hearty seasonal specialties?
Europe offers many great winter sports destinations, but one stands out amongst all others: Les Trois Vallées in the French Alps. Not only is it the most extensive ski area in the world, offering endless slopes, a huge variety of activities, and breathtaking nature, but it is also this year's host of the World Alpine Ski Championships, which took place earlier this month. No matter whether you want to follow in the footsteps of the pros racing downhill, go snow hiking, or relax in a world-class spa: Les Trois Vallées offers it all.
Taking your EV and charging at IONITY ensures a carbon-neutral journey and gives you all the flexibility onsite to explore Les Trois Vallées. Let’s go!
From Munich to Les Trois Valleés
From Munich through Austria
Our journey starts in Munich, where on a clear day you can already see the beginning of the Alps on the horizon. You start on the A96 heading southwest and change to the A14 in Austria. After 205 kilometers you have a good opportunity for a first stop with the IONITY station Hohenems/Rheintal. Hungry already? The Rosehill Food Park, right next to the IONITY chargers, offers great meal options for all times of the day.
Highlights nearby
If you have some time to spare, explore the picturesque little town of Hohenems in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, just ten minutes from the IONITY station. The palace, the former residence of the Counts of Hohenems, and the medieval Alt-Ems Castle with its viewing platform are particularly beautiful.
Crossing into Switzerland
Back on the road, we take the A1 westbound, where our next stop awaits after 235 kilometers: the IONITY station Grauholz Süd. While you charge, we recommend walking over to the Green Garden restaurant and trying the homemade specialties from the onsite Patisserie and the regional signature coffee blend "Lilla E Rose". If you are looking for an overnight stay, the Hotel Grauholz is located right next to the charging station.
Highlight nearby
If you have some time to explore, Bern is less than seven kilometers from the IONITY station “Grauholz Süd”. There is plenty to do here, but our top picks are the Bear Park “BärenPark” or exploring Bern's old town on a sunny day. And for those who simply cannot get enough electromobility, E-Bikes are also available for rent.
Arriving in France
The next IONITY station, Aire de Fontanelles, is only 220 kilometers further south. There is a sandwich shop here for light snacks and a grill restaurant if you are looking for a full meal while charging your car.
Highlight nearby
You will pass through Geneva, the second biggest Swiss city, ten minutes before arriving at the Aire de Fontane charging stop. If you can, plan some time and take a walk along Lake Geneva while enjoying the breathtaking views of Mont Blanc.
The final kilometers
Moving on, there are two options to reach the final destination, Les Trois Vallées. One is taking the D1508 / D1212 along the shore of the marvelous Lake Annecy. The other one is taking the A41. Although the lake route is about 30 kilometers shorter, the highway option is usually faster. You will then arrive in the Les Trois Vallées region.
Highlights in the area
The area is one big highlight in itself! The World Alpine Ski Championship 2023 was held in Méribel and Courchevel, only ten kilometers apart from each other. Thrill-seekers will find plenty of challenges here. If you are looking for more relaxed activities, there are slopes for every experience level, cross-country ski trails, world-class wellness hotels, and endless opportunities to explore the wintery nature.
Heading home
Once it’s time to head back home, it's pretty straightforward. Instead of charging at Aire de Fontanelles, find your way to the IONITY station Valleiry Sud on the right side of the highway and from then on, follow all the other stations in reverse order.
